Durg Bhandar is easy-to-climb fort – trekking to this fort will be the best experience for everyone this winter. It is situated near Trimbakeshwar and one has to climb Bramhagiri hills to reach there. Walking on the wall between Bramhagiri Hills and Durg Bhandar will be the adventurous part of this trek which will lead you rock-cut steps on the Durg Bhandar. From the top, one can witness the picturesque view of Temples in the Trimbakeshwar area. Durg Bhandar lies in Nashik region near in Trimbakeshwar and part of Brahmagiri mountain. Durg Bhandar or Bhandar Durg is more sort of a watchtower. The main attraction here is the deep rock cut steps which goes deep inside from Brahmagiri mountain the fissure and comes out in natural bridge and again goes up the fissure to Durg Bhandar. Apart from this Brahmagiri is also the source of Godavari river which flows towards east and meets Bay of Bengal. Durg Bhandar has a unique shape as it is like a cubicle and seperated from main mountain by the natural rock

Durg Bhandar fort is on Brahmagiri (1298 meters) mountain. This is fort offers a commanding view of the Jawhar Mokhada region of Thane district. From Trimbakeshwar, through regular steps, Ganga dwar is reached and once you reached to Jata Mandir you need go right side to reach Durg Bhandar. Following the route one reaches the carved steps in the rocks. The steps are very good even in the recent times. They were blown off by Britishers in 1818 but later on, they were rebuilt somewhere before India gained independence. From the base village, Brahmagiri is around 450 to 500 meters elevated From the road to Brahmagiri it takes you till the top in around 45 minutes and almost 2 hours to see the fort completely. There are 2 temples on this fort the place which is believed to be the origin point of Godavari river. From here, the river flows till Ganga dwar and then towards Kushavart teerth in Trimbakeshwar village. One can reach this place by an ascent of about 750 steps made on concrete. There is a Mandir dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The river appears here as coming out from the mouth of Nandi. Kolambika Devi temple and a group of 108 shivalings are seen nearby. Must visit the place during Mansoon to get a great Nature View and enjoy Thrilling trekking.

Durgbhandar fort , Nasik. This fort is adjacent to the Bhramagiri mountain. It is at one end of the Bhramagiri mountain. The fort has two parts one which is part of Bhramagiri mountain . The other part is connected to this part via a natural ridge. The ridge looks like a natural bridge connecting the two mountain parts. The way to the ridge from both part of mountains is through steps which are cut inside the mountain. Each side has about 60 steps which connect the top of each mountain section to the ridge. At the end the steps lead to a entrance /exit however the same is partly buried and one has to bend to move in/out. There must have been proper doors at these places in ancient times. The ridge must be around 100 ft deep from the mountain tops. On the other side the fort has a bastion. One would be awestruck seeing the steps which are cut inside the mountain and this raises the question how someone would have first thought about this unique idea of connecting the ridge in this fashion, also what tools must have been used to cut these steps , how much labour and time must have gone in cutting these steps and many more questions. A big salute to our ancestors who have created this marvel and we all are lucky to still see this. PC : Yours truly Dop : Feb 23, 2023
