In January 1901, on the death of Queen Victoria, The 1st Baron Curzon of Kedleston (later created The 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston), the then Viceroy of India, suggested the creation of a fitting memorial. Lord Curzon proposed the construction of a grand building with a museum and gardens.

It is a huge marble building built around the early 20th century and dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria. At present it is a Museum showcasing artefacts of the British era and is a popular tourist destination. People from all over India come here to see the beautiful marble structure and statues as well as the British era dresses, arts and documents housed within the museum. Local people also spend their evenings in the Garden around the Memorial Hall. The garden around the museum hall is a safe place for local couples seeking some moments of solitude. The entry fee for only the garden is rupees 20, for Garden as well as the Museum it is rupees 30 for Indians. The entry fee is rupees 500 for foreign nationals but only rupees hundred for people from the SAARC member countries. The Museum and the garden closes at 6:00 p.m. and be sure to get out by that time as any delay may result in disciplinary action by the security guards. The behaviour of the security guards is one of the worse you will see anywhere. I say this from my own personal experience.
Camera is allowed inside free of cost but there are restrictions on the use of tripod stand.
Be sure to carry water bottle with you when you are inside as you may spend 2 to 3 hours once you are inside. You can carry eatables inside but please do not litter and carry a small bag with you in which you can throw the waste. You will also find many dust bins in the garden and you can throw your waste in those dustbins.
The nearest metro stations to Victoria Memorial Hall are Maidan metro station and Esplanade metro station.

Victoria Memorial is one of the famous and beautiful monuments of Kolkata. It was built between 1906 and 1921 to commemorate Queen Victoria's 25-year reign in India. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the British government gathered the reins of control of the country directly, and in 1876 the British parliament made Victoria the Empress of India. Her reign ended with her death in 1901.
The Victoria Memorial is possibly the most awesome reminder of the Raj to be found in India. This huge white-marble museum, made from Makrana marbles from Rajasthan, is filled with a vast collection of remnants from the period of British Empire rule in India. The forms in the museum like the great dome, clustered with four subsidiary, octagonal domed chattris, the high portals, the terrace and the domed corner towers speak of a splendid richness in architecture. The Memorial is situated on 64 acres of land with the building covering 338 ft by 228 ft.
Lord Curzon, who was then the Viceroy of India, placed the question of setting up a 'stately' memorial for Queen Victoria, on her death in January 1901 to the public. The princes and people of India responded generously to his appeal for funds and Lord Curzon derived the total cost of construction of this monument amounting to one crore, five lakhs of rupees (Rs.1,05,00,000) from their voluntary subscriptions. The Prince of Wales, King George V, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906 and it was formally opened to the public in 1921.
