The place is a bit interior from the main road. It's a walking distance of about 10mins to B. T. Road. Walking distance from Ganga ferry ghat as well. Lot of grocery shops are there so, no need to go far for daily utilities.

This memorial bust of Shri Purna Chandra Mukhopadhyay was erected at his residence in Panihati. He was a prominent historian and a scholar who discovered the actual birth place of Shri Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. He was born on 19th June, 1849 and died on 4th August, 1903.

Indian archaeologist Babu Purnachandra Mukhopadhyay discovered the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. He was born on 19th June 1849 in Panihati. A street in front of his homestead is also dedicated in his name. There is no trace of that homestead at present. But there is a bust of him.
Indian history remembers Babu Purnachandra Mukhopadhyay for the discovery of Kapilavastu. In 1868, he was a student who passed the first entrance examination from Sodpur High School. Passed MA from Canning College, Lucknow. He got a job in Lucknow Government Works Department.
Purnachandra Mukhopadhyay started working as a government archaeologist in 1883. But many could not accept him at work. As a result, he resigned and joined the work of P.W.D. But by that time archeology was ingrained in his mind.
He took charge of the first phase of the Department of Archeology at the Museum in Calcutta. A call came again from ASI in 1897 AD.
Purnachandra took the responsibility of conducting excavations in search of fossils. All work was supervised by Vincent Smith himself. Work began in January 1899.
Buddha changed the history of India. And his lost capital was found by Babu Purnachandra Mukhopadhyay. The Government of India published his report on Kapilavastu and Bundelkhand.
In 1900, he conducted excavations at the Sun Temple in Konark, Odisha. He passed away on 4th August 1903 at the age of 53 at his homestead in Panihati.
Today is the 119th death anniversary of Purnachandra Mukhopadhyay, the Indian archaeologist and discoverer of the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. Today, on his death day, a tribute from a Panihati resident like me.
Panihati of pride and all of West Bengal will be blessed with this fame of great people like him for the rest of our lives.
Due to road widening, his bust was re-erected at the initiative of Panihati Municipality. Even though the homestead is no longer there, this special contribution of his will remain a source of pride throughout our lives.

গৌতম বুদ্ধের জন্মস্থানের আবিস্কারক ভারতীয় প্রত্নতত্ত্ববিদ বাবু পুর্ণচন্দ্র মুখোপাধ্যায়। তাঁর জন্ম হয়েছিল ১৮৪৯ সালের ১৯শে জুন পানিহাটিতে। তাঁর নামে তাঁর বসতবাড়ির সামনে একটি রাস্তাও উৎসর্গ করা হয়েছে। বর্তমানে সেই বসতবাড়ির চিহ্ন নেই। কিন্তু রয়েছে তাঁর একটি আবক্ষ মূর্তি।
ভারতের ইতিহাস কপিলাবস্তু আবিষ্কারের জন্যই বাবু পূর্ণচন্দ্র মুখোপাধ্যায়কে মনে রেখেছে । ১৮৬৮ তে সোদপুর হাইস্কুল থেকে প্রথম প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষায় উর্ত্তীন ছাত্র ছিলেন তিনি। লক্ষ্ণৌ ক্যানিং কলেজ থেকে এম.এ পাশ করেন। তিনি লক্ষ্ণৌর সরকারী পূর্ত্ত দপ্তরে চাকরি পান।
১৮৮৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সরকারি প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিকের কাজ শুরু করেন পূর্ণচন্দ্র মুখোপাধ্যায়। কিন্তু কর্মক্ষেত্রে তাঁকে মেনে নিতে পারেননি অনেকেই। ফলে পদত্যাগ করে পি।ডব্লিউ.ডির কাজে যোগ দেন। কিন্তু ততদিনে পুরাতত্ত্ব তাঁর মনে গেঁথে গিয়েছিল।
কলকাতায় জাদুঘরে পুরাতত্ত্ব বিভাগের প্রথমিক পর্বে দায়িত্ব পান। এএসআই থেকে আবার ডাক আসে ১৮৯৭ খ্রিস্টাব্দে।
কপিলাবস্তুর সন্ধানে খননকার্য পরিচালনার দায়িত্ব নিলেন পূর্ণচন্দ্র। সমস্ত কাজের তদারকি করলেন স্বয়ং ভিনসেন্ট স্মিথ। কাজ শুরু হল ১৮৯৯ সালের জানুয়ারি মাসে।
ভারতবর্ষের ইতিহাস বদলে দিয়েছিলেন বুদ্ধদেব। আর তাঁর হারিয়ে যাওয়া রাজধানী খুঁজে বের করেছিলেন বাবু পূর্ণচন্দ্র মুখোপাধ্যায়। ভারত সরকার তাঁর কপিলাবস্তু ও বুন্দেলখন্ডের উপর রচিত প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করে।
১৯০০ সালে উড়িষ্যার কোনারকের সুর্য মন্দির এ খনন কার্য পরিচালনা করেছিলেন। ১৯০৩ সালে ৪ঠা আগষ্ট মাত্র ৫৩ বছর বয়সে পানিহাটিতে তাঁর বসতবাড়িতে পরলোক গমন করেন।
আজ ভারতীয় প্রত্নতত্ত্ববিদ তথা গৌতম বুদ্ধের জন্মস্থানের আবিস্কারক পুর্ণচন্দ্র মুখোপাধ্যায়ের ১১৯তম প্রয়ান দিবস। আজ তাঁর প্রয়ান দিবসে রইল আমার মতো পানিহাটি বাসীর পক্ষ থেকে শ্রদ্ধা ।
গর্বের পানিহাটি তথা পশ্চিমবঙ্গের সকলে তাঁর মতো মহান মানুষের এই খ্যাতিতে আমরা সারাজীবন ধন্য থাকব।
রাস্তা সম্প্রসারণের কারণে তাঁর আবক্ষ মূর্তিটি পানিহাটি পৌরসভার উদ্যোগে পুনরায় প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হল। বর্তমানে বসতবাড়িটি না থাকলেও তাঁর এই বিশেষ অবদান সারা জীবন আমাদের গর্বের কারণ হিসাবে থাকবে।
