Not a big temple, but still having historical significance on it's stone carvings. Temple of lord Shiva. This place is maintained by archeological survey of India.

It was built around 7-8 century. Carved from a single rock, and it's incomplete. Usually no one notice this place very much. Well protected historical place. No entry fee, the entry is totally free. Situated near the road side so there is no place for proper parking.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Temple is a unique piece of 8th century history which all South Indians can be very proud of. The small site is fenced off by ASI and maintained well since 1965. Not sure many Trivandrumites might know about this 1200 year old monument next to the Vizhinjam junction. During the Ay dynasty which ruled from Pampa to Kanyakumari from early Pallava period to 10th Century. There are very few monuments left today for this period. So the small Vizhinjam Rock Cut temple is very important site to appreciate their art and architecture. The granite outcrop, part of which is destroyed by the later generations, has the relief of Lord Siva as Kirathamurthy on one side and a unfinished relief of dancing Lord Siva and Parvathi. The temple faces east and enshrines a loose sculpture of Vinadhara Dhakshinamurthi. One wonders this amazing reliefs on granite have some resemblance with 7th Century Pallava monuments of Mamallipuram. Amazing place and a must visit site.

An amazing relic dating back half a millennium to the time of the Ay kings. Peaceful stands the rock temple in silent testimony to the faith of the kings who built it. Perhaps the did not have time or anticipated no long stay the place for anything more elaborate.

Southern Kerala’s most beautiful natural rock formation can be found at the Vizhinjam caves in Thiruvananthapuram district. These rock-cut sculptures date all the way back to the 18th century and are located to the south of Kovalam junction. The shrine has a central cell with an independent sculpture of Dakshinamurthy and on either side of the cell are unfinished sculptures of Siva and Parvathi.
