Built in 1962, the old pier located near the port office on the south end of the Promenade extended 210 metres into the sea. The pier was originally built to transport cargo in wooden boats from ships anchored 2 km off the Puducherry coast. A railway line also used to exist on the top of the pier and the goods from boats were lifted through cranes and shifted to godowns in the port. Few months back on 2022, this middle portion of this pier has been collapsed due to lack of any further maintenance and corrosion on the concreate pillars . This pier is till popular to the locals who often walks and climbs through the pillars which is really dangerous . However you must not try this and go there as the whole pier is very instable right now.

Best place for sunrise experience as well as you can have good time in evening with great scene. Evening walk is best for this location.

It's a nice place. There is rock beside the jetty. It is closed. It was too old. Better to walk under it to maina beach. On the way you see local fishermen Life.

Clean and well maintained place. Good for photoshoots and for a walk (alone or with your loved ones!)The Pondicherry pier, is quite a popular place and I think it is worth a visit to learn about the place, experience serenity and of course click some fabulous pictures/shoot some nice snippets. The pier where once the French boats docked, is now only a part of what it used to be before it was destroyed by the cyclone in the 1950s. As you can see in the picture, it’s not in the best condition anymore.

Port pier ❤️ Just like broken bridge Everything is corroded here still stand tall and good The water ll rush through the pier and ll touch ur feet which ll make u go crazy U can send sometime here with friends and family. The bridge is closed and is only open for fishermens
