The FEEDER CANAL is a 038.38 Kilometers long stretch of man-made canal situated on the upstream of the river Ganga just adjacent to the great Farakka Barrage project at Murshidabad, West Bengal. It has almost a dozen of lock-gates that control and divert water-volume to the Bhagirathi (renamed as the Hooghly river in the last few hundred kilometers), a tribiutary of Ganga which has entered Bangladesh to be named as the Padma river. The canal was made in the '70s to keep the Kolkata Port alive by feeding it proper volumes of water as the very name of the canal would suggest. Having originated from the Farakka Barrage Project, it mingles with the main stream of the Bhagirathi river near Ahiran (Nearby Station: Ahiran Halt), a rustic habitat at Murshidabad almost 39 kilometers far from its fountain-head. The place is safely guarded by the C.I.S.F. but unlike the Main Farakka Barrage itself it can be visited on feet to witness the awe-inspiring, gushing flow of controlled water, in the months from june to october, especially. The place is very near to the New Farakka Junction Railway station (Code: NFK).
