Bonkim Chondra Chattopadhyay or Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (27 June 1838–8 April 1894)was an Indian writer, poet and journalist. He was the composer of Vande Mataram, originally in Sanskrit stotra personifying India as a mother goddesses and inspiring the activists during the Indian Independence Movements. Chattopadhyay wrote thirteen novels and many serious, serio-comic, satirical, scientific and critical treaties in Bengali. His works were widely translated into other regional languages of India as well as in English.

He was called Sahitya Samrat in Bengal. He was born on 27th June, 1838 at Naihati in Bengal. He was a Deputy Magistrate and Collector in profession. He received the title of Rai Bahadur in 1891. He was a great novelist, essayist, poet, writer etc. He had a great contribution in the Renaissance movement in India. He was the composer of Vande Mataram. Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore wrote, "Bankim Chandra had equal strength in both his hands, he was a true Sabyasachi." We get first beautiful novels from his golden hand. Few writings are as follows. Durgeshnandini, Kapalkundala, Mrinalini, Brishbrikha, Indira, Jugalangario, Chandrashekhar, Radharani, Rajani, Krishnakanter will, Rajsingha, Anandamath, Devi Chowdhurani, Sitaram, Lokarahasya, Bigyanrahasya, Kamalakanta, many essay, Life of Muchiramgur etc. He died on 8th April, 1894 in Calcutta.
